sex as meditation
There are many forms of meditation, yet they have one thing in common and that is the removal, or at least reduction, of energy involved with thoughts. Normally, most of us have very busy minds, thinking, thinking, thinking all day long. And because of this ceaseless mental activity, we identify with thoughts: our thoughts, ideas, beliefs, become unrealistically important to us. We start to get agitated when our beliefs are questioned. In the extreme we will start killing people to defend our beliefs. This is a sure sign of insanity.
So meditation aims to break this identification with our thoughts, our beliefs. Any form of meditation aims to take energy away from the thinking mind – that is the central definition of meditation. Sex, any sex, is naturally a great opportunity for meditation. During sex, the physical sensations and the energy in the body are so strong that naturally our attention goes to them, and thoughts can diminish. Gaps can occur between thoughts, and we do not put so much energy into the thoughts. They are less important. There’s something much more juicy and enjoyable going on.
So with tantric sex we bring more awareness to this. We make meditation the important part of sex. We are using sex explicitly as a meditation, and it is easy to do. We need only bring our awareness to the physical sensations in the body, perhaps to the points of contact between the bodies where skin is touching skin. There is an enormous amount of biochemical activity, and of course pleasurable energy sensations can be felt throughout the body. By bringing our awareness to these sensations, naturally the awareness does not rest on thoughts as they arise. Thoughts might come and go but they have no energy in them – they are not given energy. And with this, the thoughts will dwindle. The thinking mind will become empty and rather still.
So sex is one of the most obvious forms of meditation. Indeed, some argue that this is why people enjoy sex so much, because it takes us out of our mind and into our bodies. Our bodies are so alive, so juicy compared to the dryness of thoughts. And even if during sex your mind is still busy, at least at the moment of orgasm, the thoughts stop, if only for a few seconds. There one is in a state of meditation. Anyone having an orgasm is. With tantric sex, we recognise this meditative aspect of sex, and we play with it. We bring more awareness to it, and it becomes stronger. The meditation goes deeper. Try it, try it for yourself. Play with this, with sex as meditation.
